Sensitivity of Thermometer

The sensitivity of the thermometer is the ability of the thermometer to detect a small change in temperature. Here are some of the factors that influence the sensitivity of glass thermometers

  • Thickness of the glass wall
    • A thicker glass wall reduces the sensitivity of the thermometer
  • Diameter of the capillary tube
    • The smaller diameter of the capillary tube, the greater the sensitivity of the thermometer
  • Size of bulb
    • larger bulb means more sensitivity because there is more surface area in contact
  • The thickness of the capillary tube
    • Thinner capillary tube isĀ  more sensitive since contraction and expansion of the mercury is more obvious
