An electric field is a region of electrical charge. We have two types of charges that create an electric field. Positive charge and negative charge.

Positive charge: Field lines are extended outward from the positive charge
Negative charge: Field lines are extended inward into the negative charge

The diagram above shows the interaction between two types of charges. The same charge will repel and different types of charges attract each other.
