Sound : Online IGCSE Physics Class

SOUND: ONLINE IGCSE PHYSICS CLASS

In this chapter, we will be

  • Discovering properties of sound waves
  • We will be investigating the waveform of sound waves, amplitude and frequency
  • We will be talking about echoes
  • Review some questions

A sound is a form of a wave. Sound waves are a type of mechanical wave that travels through a medium such as air, water and solids. They are created by the vibration of an object such as a guitar string and vocal cords which sets the surrounding molecules in motion.

Amplitude
Controls the loudness of the sound. The larger the amplitude, the louder the sound

Frequency
Controls the pitch of the sound. The higher the pitch, the more oscillations per second. Oscillations mean more vibrations per second.

How is the sound produced?
Sound is produced through vibrations, among the instruments used to create sounds are

  1. Cello
  2. Violin
  3. Guitar
  4. Drum

How does sound wave travel?
Sound waves travel as longitudinal waves. Compression and rarefactions os sound waves result in small differences in pressure.

How does sound pitch apply in our daily life?

The pitch of the sound is dependent on the frequency of the sound waves. Different pitch produces different sound waves. When we speak a sentence, different words is pronounced with a different tone.
